HYUNDAI TAKES THE LEAD AS THE MOST FUEL-EFFICIENT AUTOMAKER IN AMERICA

One year after promising to become the leading manufacturer in fuel economy, Hyundai delivered by topping the latest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy report.  Hyundai passed all major manufacturers in Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE), including traditional leaders like Honda and Toyota.  The report demonstrates the effectiveness of Hyundai's value-driven fuel-economy strategy, which focuses on the intelligent application of cost-effective technologies.  The report also substantiates Hyundai's leadership in the race to achieve the government-mandated 2016 CAFE standard of 35.5 miles per gallon.

The EPA 2009 Light-Duty Automotive Technology and Fuel Economy Trends Report indicates that Hyundai has the highest MY 2009 laboratory 55/45 fuel economy with 30.1 miles per gallon (mpg).  Hyundai is also the only automaker[1] to top 30 mpg in the report.

"Our thoughtful application of cost-effective, fuel-efficient technologies has helped us achieve our goal of leading the industry in fuel economy ahead of schedule," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America.  "Now we hope to extend that leadership with the launch of our new direct injection, turbo-charging and lithium-polymer hybrid technologies, all of which will be a part of the 2011 Sonata lineup launching early next year."

Hyundai is aligning global R&D resources at its engineering centers in California, Michigan, Korea, India and Germany to develop the Blue Drive technologies needed to achieve fuel efficiency goals.  Under the Hyundai Blue Drive strategy, technologies such as direct injection, turbo-charging, hybrid drive systems and a number of others will all play larger roles in powering future models to offer consumers lower emissions, enhanced performance and more miles per gallon.

2010 Hyundai Tucson a Green Machine with a Few Compromises

Hyundai has banned boxy from its styling lexicon and is calling its design language of both the new Tucson and the Sonata (coming in January) "Fluidic Sculpture."  The central idea is that "the line flows around the vehicle," as opposed to say a box grafted onto a larger box, like the old Tucson.  The new curves have the potential to attract some while turning off others.  The best view of the Tucson is the front three-quarters where, starting with the fancy wrap-around headlamps, you can see the thrust of the design's flow and how winds its way around the car.  The rear spoiler is standard-not just because it looks good, but because it aids fuel economy.

Like the body work, the innards of the Tucson have received a thorough makeover.  We can reasonably compare the Tucson's innards to a Genesis Coupe.  The 2010 Tucson comes in two styles, the GLS (standard) and the Limited (premium).  High praises go to the leather seats and Hyundai's frist "panoramic" sunroof (two panes, but only one opens), and rear passenger leg room is good, even for six footers.

The Tucson uses a high grade leather, and goes the extra step and furnishes the seats with two types of leather:  a rougher, stickier grade for your thighs and shoulders, and a smoother surface for your butt and back.

Though the navigation screen is only 6.5 inches, the touch screen works well with the iPod integration, and is better than the last generation Hyundai software.  And those who opt for the navigation system get an awesome-sounding, 360-watt stereo system that takes iPod, Aux or USB, and also includes a back up camera.

Hyundai is serious about becoming the "global fuel economy leader", and has bent over backwards to ensure the new Tucson gets more MPGs than the competition.  The 2010 Tucson delivers 23 mpg in the city and 31 highway.  None of its class competitors can even claim 30 mpg on the highway, let alone 31, which is a big selling point now-a-days.

Another plus side, the Tucson feels remarkably stiff, especially for being a little crossover.  Due to higher federal roll over standards, Hyundai was forced to use higher strength steel for the unibody, resulting in a tight, vibration and body-movement free vehicle.  It also is light for being a CUV.  As a result, the Tucson can carry more speed than you'd think. It also stays flat throught corners, with almost no body roll.
