Hyundai Hope On Wheels
Helping Kids Fight Cancer

Hope on Wheels is the united effort of Hyundai Motor America and its more than 800 dealers across the U.S. to help kids fight cancer, celebrating the hope of the brave children battling the disease and supporting the research and programs that bring us closer to better treatments, therapies and, ultimately, a cure.

Hyundai will donate more than $10 Million to Support Childhood Cancer Research Through the 2011 Hope On Wheels Program

Ceremony at the New York International Auto Show Marks Launch of 2011 Hyundai Hope on Wheels Tour

NEW YORK - April 20, 2011 - Hyundai Motor America and its dealers announced today at the New York International Auto Show plans to donate more than $10 million to support childhood cancer research through the 2011 Hyundai Hope on Wheels® program.

Kicking off with a $150,000 donation to Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital of New York-Presbyterian, Hyundai Hope on Wheels, Hyundai's nonprofit organization, will visit institutions across the U.S. in 2011 and award grants for pediatric cancer research. There are two types of Hyundai Hope on Wheels grants to be awarded: 1) Hyundai Scholars and 2) September Hope Grants.

With its Hyundai Scholars grants, Hope on Wheels will award research grants to 50 children's hospitals in 2011. The grant recipients, known as a "Hyundai Scholar," will receive a combined total of $2.7 million from Hyundai Hope on Wheels. Each of these 50 Hyundai Scholar grants will go toward funding new pediatric cancer research projects, and will be presented during a Hope on Wheels Handprint Ceremony. At the ceremony, children diagnosed with cancer get to place their handprints in colorful paint on a 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe, the official vehicle of the Hope on Wheels tour, to commemorate their brave battles with cancer.

During Childhood Cancer Awareness month, Hyundai will donate additional grants in the amount of $100,000 through its competitive September Hope Grants program. The September program allows Children's Oncology Group (COG) member institutions seeking funding in areas of childhood cancer research to apply for the grants, which are then reviewed by Hyundai's board of medical directors and awarded to hospitals around the U.S.

The 2011 program will mark the 13th straight year of Hope on Wheels' mission to fight childhood cancer, and the program will donate a total of $10.2 million to children's hospitals across the nation, a 15 percent increase from last year.

Along the way, Hyundai's National Youth Ambassador and pediatric cancer survivor, Brianna Commerford, 13, will join Hyundai for a second year at children's hospital Handprint Ceremonies all over the country. Brianna battled Stage IV Hodgkin's Lymphoma, and is now sharing her story with children, families, medical staff and communities at Hyundai Hope on Wheels ceremonies.

"At Hyundai, we thrive on new thinking and new possibilities, and Hope on Wheels supports doctors and hospitals doing just that - creating new possibilities that could someday cure childhood cancer," said John Krafcik, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor America. "We're proud that for 13 years, through year-end 2011, Hyundai and its dealers will have donated more than $34 million to the cause. Our goal is to support the important research that will find a cure for pediatric cancer."

"Since 2004, Hyundai has been a dedicated donor to the children's cancer research program at our institution," said Dr. Michael Weiner, director, Herbert Irving Child and Adolescent Oncology Center at New York-Presbyterian/Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital. "We are proud to be a recipient of Hyundai's generosity and to kick-off this year's program in support for children with cancer."

During Childhood Cancer Awareness month this September, Hyundai Hope on Wheels will visit 60 more hospitals across the country to donate grants to hospital programs dedicated to childhood cancer research. Visit the www.HyundaiHopeOnWheels.org  in August to find out which hospital and city will be the recipient of the first donation that launches this whirlwind month.

"Hope on Wheels gives Hyundai dealers an amazing opportunity to give back to our respective communities as we stand together to fight against childhood cancer," said Oscar Leeser, Chairman of the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Foundation and dealer owner of Hyundai of El Paso in El Paso, Texas. "We are proud to join these brave children and doctors in what our national youth ambassador, Brianna, calls their 'journey to wellness.'"

The Hyundai Hope on Wheels Story

Since 1998, Hyundai and its dealers have been committed to supporting the fight against childhood cancer. What began in 1998 as a local initiative supported by New England-area Hyundai dealers to raise funds for the Jimmy Fund at Boston's Dana-Farber Cancer Institute has evolved into Hyundai Hope on Wheels, an independent 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that is now supported nationwide by Hyundai's 800+ dealers and Hyundai Motor America. Since its inception, Hyundai Hope on Wheels has donated more than $23 million to children's hospitals across the country to help kids fight cancer. Every time a new Hyundai vehicle is sold in the U.S., a donation is made to Hope on Wheels.

The Hope on Wheels Tour is the united effort of Hyundai dealers across the country to raise awareness about childhood cancer and celebrate the lives of the courageous children battling the disease. In 2010, the Hope on Wheels Tour traveled to 44 children's hospitals across the country and donated more than $2 million to support further training and research for doctors involved in childhood cancer research. Hyundai Hope on Wheels designates the medical professionals supported by these donations as Hyundai Scholars.

The 2010 Tour also hosted Handprint Ceremonies for childhood cancer patients, both past and present, at the 44 children's hospitals receiving donations. The symbol of the Hope on Wheels Tour is a white Hyundai Santa Fe vehicle covered with colorful handprints representing childhood cancer patients from all over the country. The Handprint Ceremonies celebrate the courage of these patients by capturing their colorful handprints on the white Santa Fe, with attending children placing their own handprints on the car to commemorate their battle with cancer.

Why handprints? Because there's nothing more personal than a handprint and the goal of the Hope on Wheels Tour is to share the  personal triumphs of each of these children with other childhood cancer patients and their families across the country. Whether it's completing a round of chemo, celebrating a beautiful new head of hair or receiving a clean bill of health, one childhood cancer patient's milestone can be another's symbol of hope.

In 2011, Hyundai and its dealers will continue their commitment to battling childhood cancer with the "Hyundai Gives Hope on Wheels" initiative during the month of September - Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In addition to the $2 million raised through the 2010 Hope on Wheels Tour, Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai dealers donated an additional $6.8 million to children's hospitals and other non-profit organizations across the country through last year's September initiative.

Hyundai Motor America and Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk receive 2011 Run Walk Ride Award Recognized for 'Best Sponsorship Activation'

BOSTON - At the annual Run Walk Ride Fundraising Conference Hyundai Motor America was recognized for "Best Sponsorship Activation" for their work with the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk.

Since 2002, Hyundai Motor America has served as the presenting sponsor for the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk. In the event's 22-year history, Walk participants, companies and individuals have contributed more than $73 million in support of cancer care and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and more than 100 Hyundai employees have participated in the Walk, raising a collective $1.94 million. Last year, more than 8,500 participants walked all or part of the 26 mile Boston Marathon® route in September.

Hyundai Motor America and its dealers joined the fight against pediatric cancer in 1998, and today make a donation from every new Hyundai car sold in the U.S. to their non-profit foundation, Hyundai Hope on Wheels®, which was established in 2007. In turn, Hope on Wheels awards pediatric cancer research grants to institutions across the country. Says John Krafcik, President and CEO, Hyundai Motor America, "we are committed to helping find a cure for cancer, and are proud of our long standing partnership with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute."

The Hope on Wheels vehicle, a white Santa Fe, serves as the Boston Marathon® Jimmy Fund Walk pace car, leading the way from the Walk's three-mile start to the finish line at Copley Square. The car is adorned with the hand prints of pediatric patients from around the country, most recently applied by Dana-Farber pediatric patients.

"The Walk is a wonderful thing for the Boston community, and indeed, for pediatric and adult cancer care and research, as it serves as an inspiration to all on the possibilities of eliminating this disease. We are especially proud of the steadfast commitment of our New England area dealers to Hope on Wheels from its very inception," concludes Krafcik.

In addition to their foundation, Hyundai supports the Walk by providing space at their dealerships for participant t-shirt pick-up prior to the event. On Walk day, Hyundai provides each walker with mile-marker stickers that recognize their miles, provides massages at the finish line and has a strong brand presence with car displays and signage along the route.
